Estimation by Charles Linn is a great read. It challenges young readers to make a guess rather than find an exact answer. For problems larger than we can imagine sometimes we must take an educated guess, or an estimation, and this book does a great job of introducing this idea to young people. The illustrations are complex but still understandable. This book also used everyday examples which I think are great in children's novels.

Estimation is a good book for a young mathematician to explore. The book contains more questions than answers prompting students to discover the power of an educated guess. Through estimation, the author challenges readers to compare and convert amounts as well as perform multiple operations on one example (see rice example). Real world examples have readers deciding how improper estimation could lead you to a short sweater or a room full of rotten food.

Kudos for the demonstration of a googol!… (mais)

This book explains how to estimate, why we estimate and how to check if your estimate is accurate.

The first few pages of this book are a bit mundane but then it starts to become more pertinent. The pictures are a bit outdated as it is from 1970 but the information is still accurate. Overall, it does a good job of explaining this concept pretty well.

In a classroom, you may be able to skip the first few pages and get on to the parts where it asks the "why is it important" and "what if" questions. These will really get students to thinking. "What happens if the grocer's estimate is too big? What happens if the grocer's estimate is too small?" These can easily be applied in the classroom and fit in with the CCSS.… (mais)

This book was published in 1970 and is showing its age. I am classifying it as both a concept book and as a specialized book. The subject matter qualifies it as a concept book, but it has too much text and abstract ideas to really be used with emergent readers. As a specialized book it fits many criteria related to the specific and narrow focus. I rated this grades 4-8, but I really think the main audience might be math teachers who are interested in finding new hands on activities to teach estimating. This is a skill sadly missing from most students in my experience. They never gain a real relationship with numbers that allows math to make sense in the everyday world. While I think few young people would read this book and even fewer actually try to do any of the suggested activities, I could see myself using this as a resource. The book has many interesting ideas for novel activities in math classes that would promote skills in estimation.… (mais)
