Series Info/Source: This is eighth volume in the Monstress series. I got a copy of this in paperback as a Christmas Gift.

Thoughts: At this point I am not even going to try and explain the story. If you have been reading the series then you know how complex the storyline has gotten. This book takes up where the last book left off. Maika has come apart, so to speak, and her allies are scrambling to save her soul. During this process they find themselves the in the world where Monstra have been locked away.

At this point I am a bit confused about what is happening in this series. That's not new for me with this series. I never have time to go back and read all the previous books and the reader is never provided with a synopsis or character list but just dumped right back into this plethora of story lines and characters. Still, somehow I am okay with that.

The story is just so weird and so involved, I have learned just to go with it and enjoy the ride and the confusion. The illustration remains incredibly beautiful and I enjoy just looking at each frame. I am not sure where this is all going and I hope it comes to a fantastic conclusion at some point. For now, though, I am just enjoying the odd turns the story takes and the absolutely stunning artwork.

My Summary (4/5): Overall this is confusing but beautiful. I do wish there was a synopsis and characters list to jog my memory since I don't have time to do a re-read of this series every time a new book comes out. I have enjoyed the strange turns the story has taken but struggle with how this all ties into the broader story. The artwork remains absolutely stunning and I will probably continue to read this series just for that alone.

This book took me by surprise on so many levels.

First we have settings. Set on alternative Earth around the beginnings of Industrialization we are presented with breathing and living world where Humans (technology) are waging silent war against Arcanics (magic). Between these two you have plethora of creatures, starting from wise-cracking cats (as far as I can see separate race completely and considering they are true offspring of Gods and others are faulty races - I mean ... cats, right :)), wondrous animals used for traveling, monstrous apparitions from other dimensions, strange creatures lurking under guises of Humans and of course (again this book is very much a steam-punk story) dirigibles and sky ships.

Then we have story. Entire story happens during uneasy armistice between Humans and Arcanics. Both races found themselves at the stalemate after one especially destructive event that cost thousands of lives on both sides. Now both sides are licking their wounds and trying to find this unknown weapon to use it against their foes. And then in the middle of all of this we have our main protagonist Maika Halfwolf, Arcanic girl seeking revenge against the most powerful person in Human realm. As the story progresses we can see that Maika is more than it meets the eye - at times terrible power strikes out from within her and causes havoc to friend or foe surrounding her.

And finally we have art. Man, what a beautiful art. Each panel is just mesmerizing. Trust me you need to see it to believe it. To be honest this is what hooked me - when I saw it I knew this was truly a gem.

All in all exquisite book. Highly recommended to all comic and beautiful arts fans.

Steampunk / esoteric themes, a war-torn world with continuously clashing factions (run predominantly by women!!), and a girl caught in the middle of it all with a dark past and a ton of unanswered questions. I can't express how much I love all these things in such a well-crafted story. And such utterly beautiful, intricate artwork that I could practically frame everything and put it up on the wall. Extraordinarily well done.

The storyline is darkly, deliciously complex and I love the exploration of racial and political themes. The way Arcanics often had more humanity than the humans themselves... that was really telling and thought-provoking. Though leaders of both sides had political motivations that were sometimes far from benign, I still found myself mainly on the side of the Arcanics, who were enslaved and dissected mercilessly in human societies. "Human" is certainly a word that has sometimes incorrectly elevated us above other living beings.

As far as individual characters went, I found myself attached to so many. Each of them, no matter how minor, was fully fleshed out; I don't know how it was balanced so well with such an intricate world, but it was masterfully done.
- I couldn't help but root for Maika, because she had such a heart under all her toughness. Despite her terrible past and an unwanted link to a destructive force, she is determined to find her answers, to discover who she really is and where she fits into the world. Along the way, her humanity is put into perspective all the more.
- Tuya!!! The plot twist with her true identity really threw me for a loop. How could she have played multiple sides this whole time!? And yet I still love her character in spite of all its secrets and deception. What has come over me?
- Kippa is a precious, talented baby who must be protected at all costs. 'Nuff said.
- Heck, I even grew to like Zinn... he may be a crazy demon stuck in what's left of Maika's arm, but I was rooting for them both as they started learning more about each other, and learning to work as a team. I live for the glimpses of his softer side, same as with Maika.
- CATS. LOTS OF CATS. The way they were portrayed, with their own mysterious society and lore and occasional meddling in everyone else's affairs... Perfection. Master Ren, for all his bluffs, blundering and bravado, is my #1 favorite cat here.

Honestly, aside from the raving descriptions above, I don't have another way to fully encompass how I feel about this story. All I can say is, read it, and you will not be disappointed, except when you have to wait a bit for the next volume to come out!
