This story has an unusual beginning. It introduces the characters like a movie through action showing their characters personalities in detail in a 'Home Alone' setting. Jack (11) is a dreamer, Jamie (13) is the responsible carer, and Ellie (11) is just a bit awkward with everyone. Besieged by bailiffs, police and captured by Social workers the heroes end up at their dad's house. After a little more character description, the children go boating, drown and end in the Underworld. They meet their nemesis face to face, escape and are set on a Quest they have to complete to get home. This is a thrilling, twisting plot where the most unlikely happens. It has similarities with the 'Lion the witch and the Wardrobe,' ending it battle scenes against overwhelming odds. Lots of magic and all the things you normally expect in a fairytale for older kids.… (mais)

This is an enchanting tale that any child would find amusing. In Roald Dahl fashion Henrietta lives in a dysfunctional household with parents who do not like her. Indeed parent / child roles are somewhat reversed. The miserable child is surprised by he mother's sudden change of heart when she takes her to school. However, Henri soon realises that she is a laughing stock and a pariah and no one wants to play with her or even talk. The kind intervention of her teacher helps her realise what a cruel trick has been played on her.
Henri after 10/11 years is now a different child, bent on revenge. Her change of heart is knocked sideways when she learns her parents do not want her and are going to send her away. Only;y after a magic coat is thrown at her does she realise they are not her parents. She cries and attracts the attention of a treki alien called Eanie Meanie who agrees to help. Suddenly she finds she is stranded in another world and meets a second malicious alien called Geegle. After a further twist the tree of them share one goal to get Henrietta home to her world. On their way a third character joins the called Arthur Charmin, a boy who is not a boy.
The remainder of the story covers Henri's adventurous school life and her journey far away from Earth. This is a book you cannot put down and need to keep turning the pages.

This is a light hearted, yet austere look at multiculturalism. It deals with issues of immigration and emigration, and how host communities receive outsiders. The two main characters are Katie a modern girl from London with little belief in religion just fun. She meet a a boy who came from a pluralistic religious society who had a background of persecution. The boy Naji, has amnesia and wonders why he is living out of step with time. His great passion is to find his family and cope with the local bulling villagers. Katie is equally disliked because the local hotel is thought to impact negatively on the life of the village. Boy and girl are thrown together in what is often a difficult relationship. The mystery follows the course of Katie's understanding of her friend as she negotiates solutions with her parents. The books seems to end with a happy note until the final twist which will certainly throw the reader. It is not an unhappy book, but it will challenge the reader to think about issues of race, identity, religion, and glimpse into how an ordinary situation can be viewed by another person. Challenging and readable.… (mais)
