I really enjoyed reading primary documents along with textbook for my 19th century history class. The dozens of documents encompass all sides and viewpoints, divided into 20 chapters in three sections: Republican America; Race, Slavery, and Civil War; The Progressive Era. Not surprisingly the styles and approaches are varied. I now know more about myself when I say that I am progressive. I felt more empathy with the authors gathered under this label. reading these and the others also helped me to see logical fallacies, value systems, conclusions drawn on limited information. But even the most rabid authors had at least a few valid observations or arguments, so nobody was black or white. The editor of the book is a professor at UCSB. He ave us one lecture during the course. He had the energy of a motivational speaker running around on the stage with a headmike, showing moveclips, animating powerpoints. I could admire not just his knowledge but his presentation.
