About the Author

Robert Lee Maril is professor of sociology and the founding director of the Center for Diversity and Inequality Research at East Carolina University. The author of many books, including Patrolling Chaos: The U.S. Border Patrol in Deep South Texas (TTUP, 2006) he has testified three times on his mostrar mais research before the U.S. Congress, and his work has been widely cited both in scholarly publications and the national media. Although this is technically an academic study of the social conditions of life in the Lower Rio Grande Valley of Texas, this book reads more like a memoir--and a very interesting one at that. Maril, a professor at a small local college, tells the story of his arrival in South Texas, his experiences as a teacher at a regional technical college, and adapting to life in the Valley, along with all its nuances and idiosyncracies. A wonderful book that gives one man's honest assesment of what it's like to live in one of the most liminal spots in the American landscape today.… (mais)
