Nicki J. Markus

Dragon's Heart is a surprisingly engaging YA fantasy short story. The plot is deceptively simple- a young rebellious girl sent on a quest to save the land. However, in just 33 pages, Nicki J Markus establishes character and the world they live in, introduces conflict and motivations and concludes the well paced tale with a happy ending. I rarely read short stories because I find them unsatisfying in general but Dragon's Heart worked well. Markus made the best use of the abbreviated format to tell a story and give all the elements credibility. It's difficult to discuss the tale much more without giving spoilers so suffice it to say, if you are a fan of YA paranormal romance and have a few minutes then I would expect that you would enjoy Dragon's Heart.
