MISSING AN INSIDE FRONT SHEET GIVING I PRESUME THE DATE IT WAS PUBLISHED WHICH WAS CERTAINLY PRE WW2 BY THE EDUCATIONAL BOOK COMPANT TALLIS HOUSE. THESE ARE NICE COPIES AND GIVE AN INSIGHT INTO SO MUCH WE TAKE FOR GRANTED TODAY . MOST INTERESTING TAKE ON SOME ITEMS AND MR MEE HAS A WONDERFUL WAY OF EXPLAINING IT WITHOUT ADDING TO MUCH ACADEMIC FLANNEL. RED VELLUM COVERS 9 VOLUMES

I bought a set of Children's Book of Knowledge for my son to read. He was 6 or 7 at the time, and as I write this review in late 2013, he is 11 years old now and still reads from and enjoys these volumes. This is a great purchase to go along with anyone's Classical Education curriculum. The Children's Book of Knowledge (CBOK) set that we got was written in the 1950's, before editors/publishers started dumbing down books. The information in the CBOK set is vast, well written, and interesting to read. You'll find yourself reading/enjoying right along with your kids. Of course since they were written in the '50's, you will have to supplement for history/science/world events after that time period. But you can't beat the wonderful education you/your child will get all the way up to that point with this set. Highly recommended!… (mais)

I remember Arthur Mee as the author of "Arthur Mee's encyclopaedia for children which was heavily advertised on the radio when I was very young. And my parents (wisely, as it turned out) refused to invest in our future by purchasing a copy. (We had a two volume dictionary with illustrations....what more could we require in the way of reference books). So I was interested when I saw this volume about Sussex by Arthur Mee. After purchasing it I discovered that he seems to have written a similar volume for every part of Britain. Sussex was of special interest for me because that 's where one branch of my great great grandparents, on my fathers/s side, came from. In some of the papers they come from Mountfield and in some from Battle (where the battle of Hastings was fought). Mountfield gets a few sentences and Battle a few more....as it should because that is where Saxon Britain (as Arthur Lee says) ceased and Norman Britain began.
Actually, It's quite an interesting little book which might be useful if one was wandering around this part of England but maybe not enough detail on any one spot to really give good coverage, I must say that I rather like the old sepia photographs ...but they are rather few and far between ..and mostly of churches. And for my purposes it did not really tell me very much about my ancestral villages.
