Bruce Meisterman

There is minimal text in this book and it comes at the beginning of each chapter. The star, or I should say stars of Arn? Narn are Mr. Meisterman's photos. Beautiful, stark, arresting, compelling, devastating, joyful - these words don't begin to describe the sights you will see and the emotions you will feel as you view them.
The cod industry was the lifeblood of the hardy folk of Newfoundland but the fish are now gone through overfishing, changing climate and new rules for fishing the few fish that remain have practically destroyed a society. Yet the people continue to push forward and survive as they always have looking for new ways to support themselves.
The photos are in black and white which adds to the bleakness of the situation and yet also adds a certain drama that would not be there in color. This is a book that I pick up and page through at odd times for the scenery is breathtaking even when the story is so heartbreaking.… (mais)
