This was a great summer of cricket, England winning the Ashes in glorious fashion, Botham and Willis magnificent. The book with its stiff covers, if I remember correctly, came out very quickly after the series. That is why it consists mainly of accounts of each day's play with scorecards and photographs. There was little time for analysis or reflection. The blurb on the back cover says 'in 2094 it will still be remembered'. it is in 2019. It its a book to treasure. I remember the pleasure I had seeing it on the bookshop shelves.… (mais)

England's " Daily Telegraph" started a cricket almanack to compete with "Wisden" and "Playfair" with 1984's edition the second in what I suspect was a fairly short line. I guess it's not the worst cricket annual the world has seen but one can't but compare it to "Wisden" and find the "Daily Telegraph Cricket Year Book 84" lacking.

As ever, when reading an old cricket almanack, the best part is to use your 20/20 hindsight to judge the predictions the authors have made of then young and promising cricketers. An Australian junior side, captained by "Mark Veletta", included Craig McDermott, Ian Healy, Tony Dodemaide and Craig Bradley, more famous for going on to be one of the greatest Australian rules footballers of all time. Young England included Hugh Morris, Neil Fairbrother, Steven Rhodes and Peter Such. Some decent talent there. There's also the obituaries column, written by no less than E.W. Swanton, featuring South African Alan Melville and Australians Homesdale Nitschke and Jack Badcock.

It's all interesting enough but in the back of your mind you're always thinking that "Wisden" did this better. Which I guess is part of the reason why "Wisden" is up to edition 154 and I'd never heard of the "Daily Telegraph Cricket Year Book" until I picked this one up to read.
