I don’t speak Southern-speak and would probably struggle if I heard it. But Amy Metz’s mystery, Murder and Mayhem in Good Pimple Junction, renders the language simultaneously audible, legible and understandable, with chapter headers introducing cool phrases, and a protagonist who’s just as at sea in this strange new place as I would be. The dialog is convincing, the characters are pleasing and believably quirky, and the blend of 30s low-life with modern-day normality is enjoyably compelling.

Of course, this modern-day normality might become a little strange when newcomer Tess finds her house burgled and her life possibly threatened. Luckily there’s hunky author Jackson Wright ready and willing to help out—but is Tess ready and willing to accept any man’s help.

Tess and Jackson are both authors, a fact that might normally put me off reading because other people’s authors are always so much more successful than myself. But these are great characters of differing levels of success. Tess is earnest and lacking self-confidence. Jackson is outgoing but private. Together they’re just the team to solve a murder long gone and forgotten, and keep a great community from falling apart. I read it fast and really enjoyed this story.
