The main characters in this story, Tess and Cain, are two troubled teens, both struggling in different areas. The adventure they take is, for each of them, a journey of discovery. Tess has had a terrible accident in her past and lost her mother and sister and is dealing with an over protective father. Cain, is discovering his Native American heritage against his parents wishes. After stumbling upon a group of poachers that are after the rare albino deer, they are off to save the albino fawn and deliver him to the sacred ground that the Ojibewe tribe tells about. With the poachers hot on their heels, they travel through the woods and come upon many challenges. With close calls, and ghostly fog, they continue their quest to Manitowish Waters and Lost Creek. Along the way, I feel they both discover their own strengths within themselves. I think Tess learns more about herself, but Cain is also learning about himself and his heritage. Several times, you think their luck has finally run out and they won't be able to complete their journey, but then “something” always steps in to help them out. Maybe the spirits of the Native American people have a hand in this. After the completion of the quest, the kids are found and Tess is whisked away to be checked out and Cain is arrested and taken to jail. The poaching ring is uncovered and punished. Eventually it all works out for the best.

I liked the characters and the story line. I loved the Native American feel to the story. I think that in the end the story tells us that in life there is so much going on that we must learn to balance it all out. And sometimes that means taking a “journey” whether physically, mentally, or emotionally to establish that balance and learn to live our lives peacefully and to come to terms with who we are and are meant to be. Geared more towards the YA crowd, it is also a decent read for adults. ***I received this copy courtesy of a Good Reads Give away***

I received a copy to facilitate my review. The opinions expressed here are my own.
So suspensful. I read it in one sitting. What happens when you have an over protective parent? You rebel. I understood Tess's father being overprotective. I became that overprotective parent after my son was run over while playing in our front yard. If it had not been for my marriage to a wonderful man who was patient with me while teaching me it was okay to give my son and daughter some freedom, I would have remained that overprotective parent.

For Tess, her rebellion causes her to meet Cain and start a quest with him. The quest will put them in danger from poachers. They are trying to protect the white deer. There is a large herd of these albino deer in Wisconsin and the author did a great job of making this plight known through this story. Sometimes it is necessary to do what you know is right. That is a lesson taught in this book. This is a wonderful, mysterious read.

While I'm way beyond the target audience for this novel, I enjoyed it very much and wished it had been longer. I'm hoping for a sequel or at least more like this from the author. This was non-stop adventure and very hard to put down. I read the first half in one sitting. The good guys were very likeable and I cared about them, while the bad guys satisfyingly got what they deserved - I was pleasantly surprised that the author did not shy away from that and she did it in a way that was not simply gratuitous violence. Refreshingly too, this story is free from gratuitous "romance" while still making the vestiges of my 15-year-old girl's heart go thumpity-thump for the male lead. My only complaint is that I wished the fulfillment of the quest had been more meaningful - it seemed a bit of a let down after the adventure of getting that far. A sequel could perhaps address that (hint, hint). Nice regional focus on northern Wisconsin, the gigantic Chequamegon Forest, the Ojibwe natives, and the fascinating albino deer herd (as a lifelong Wisconsinite, they nevertheless amaze me). Again, I am hoping for more in this vein from the author even though I'm much older than the intended reader.

I received a free copy from the author thru the Goodreads giveaway in exchange for a review.

'Ancient Elk Hunt' by G.M.Moore

The fun of kayaking, fishing, exploring, nature adventuring, and finding fossils for two friends who enjoy each others company a second summer in a row, make this a terrific read. The writing style itself both pulls a reader right into the story and SLIPS a reader definitely into the almost swashbuckling milieu. Now I wish to read the first book of the series, 'Muskie Attack", as there are plenty of avid fisherfolk in our family. I see a third book to this series comes out soon (Snakehead Invasion) which is about voracious fish-eating (maybe) fish. Super read and great characters in this series!
