It's not well written ... or at least, and perhaps understandably, it's written in journalese, with many breathy and often incomplete sentences, and some complete reiterations and repetitions, but I doubt Moor was wanting to be Patrick White (and White is incomprehensible after all!). So it does well what it sets out to do - it reminds a reader that the ugly underworld existed, was ignored by authorities,and, though penned in 1989, it raises the spectre that plus ça change, plus c'est la même chose. I suspect only the nature of the gangs has changed, as La Famiglia and Mr Asia have probably surrendered territory to Triads and bikies. But who knows, and those that do aren't telling.… (mais)
