She studied at the École normale supérieure for young girls in Sèvres, before obtaining the agrégation (civil service exam to teach) in history in 1962 and her doctorate in history.
She became a lecturer at the École pratique des hautes etudes; a researcher at the Centre national de la recherche scientifique (National Center for Scientific Research or CNRS); then director of the Department of currencies, medals, and antiquities of the National Library of France (BnF) from 1988 to 1990. She was the advisor for Byzantine numismatics at Dumbarton Oaks in Washington, DC from 1998 to 2018. She was awarded the Royal Numismatic Society Medal in 1994, and the British Academy's Derek Allen Prize for numismatics in 1999. In 2015, she was elected a member of the Académie des inscriptions et belles-lettres. Dr. Morrisson is the author of more than two dozen books and major publications on Byzantine history of currency and economics.
