This book gave me the creeps in parts, honestly. I'm too young to have witnessed Chernobyl firsthand, but the way that Mould depicts the accident, it seems like there was so much negligence from so many people. This shouldn't have happened, and it's chilling how much citizens were affected - forced evacuation within a day of the accident, extraordinarily high levels of cancer and birth defects, not to mention the psychological traumas.
Mould makes an interesting decision to close the book with a section on the culture of the area, pre-Chernobyl. And that last part of the book stands as testimony to a culture which abruptly ceased to exist one April day in 1986, even though people are still affected by the Chernobyl disaster now… (mais)
