About the Author
Haruki Murakami was born on January 12, 1949 in Kyoto, Japan and studied at Tokyo's Waseda University. He opened a coffeehouse/jazz bar in the capital called Peter Cat with his wife. He became a full-time author following the publication of his first novel, Hear the Wind Sing, in 1979. He writes mostrar mais both fiction and non-fiction works. His fiction works include Norwegian Wood, Colorless Tsukuru Tazaki and His Years of Pilgrimage, The Strange Library, and Men Without Women. Several of his stories have been adapted for the stage and as films. His nonfiction works include What I Talk About When I Talk About Running. He has received numerous literary awards including the Franz Kafka Prize for Kafka on the Shore, the Yomiuri Prize for The Wind-Up Bird Chronicle, and the Jerusalem Prize. He has translated into Japanese literature written by F. Scott Fitzgerald, Raymond Carver, Truman Capote, John Irving, and Paul Theroux. (Bowker Author Biography) mostrar menos

Neste agradável livro, o mais popular dos escritores japoneses no Ocidente, conta de forma intimista a importância da corrida na sua vida enquanto dá algumas pinceladas sobre a sua carreira de romancista e como transitou de proprietário de um Clube de Jazz a escritor de renome.
Murakami recusa a classificar este livro de ensaio. Contudo, seria talvez redutor, como o próprio autor admite, dizer que se trata das suas "memórias". É um exercício de escrita algo original a meio caminho entre a descrição de uma paixão, um memorando e a partilha de sentidos a respeito dos seus limites e ambições.
Em alguns momentos deixa a impressão que o escreveu como uma necessidade quase física de transpor para o papel as respostas à curiosidade que este seu prazer pelo desporto desperta. Embora fale das suas experiências no triatlo, é na corrida que derrama toda a sua paixão e empenho. Afirma que a corrida o deixou mais forte no plano físico e intelectual e descreve de forma viva a sua evolução como corredor amador que tem no currículo muitas maratonas e treinos no Japão, EUA, Havai e muitos outros locais.
Fica a dúvida: O seu ofício é a escrita mas é a corrida de fundo que verdadeiramente o preenche ou ambos se complementam numa perfeita simbiose, como aliás se demonstra, neste interessante texto?… (mais)
