He played a considerable role in uncovering and popularising the exploits of pioneer aviator Richard Pearse via his 1973 work, The Riddle of Richard Pearse. His other major biography, Denis Glover: His Life (1999), was the first full account of that significant figure in New Zealand literature.

A very engaging history of a fascinating character. I particularly enjoyed the tales of Pearse's improvisatory originality (make a propellor from the sheep dip tank or use golden syrup cans for a lightweight metal screen).
