A flight attendant discovers a note in the first-class washroom indicating the plane (and its 400 passengers and crew) will be destroyed if two conditions are not met. Then it turns out that the pilot might be involved and the co-pilot is Alex's son.

For the first two-thirds I found this a page turner, but it went on a bit long. The portrayal of the differing priorities and approaches of the Swedish authorities and those in the US was well done and felt realistic. I thought the author could have done a better job of hammering home the diminishing time left for a solution to be found - I was never quite sure how much fuel the plane still had. The ending made sense and pulled most things together satisfactorily, but there were aspects of the pilot's behaviour that remain confusing to me.… (mais)

I have had to skip an instalment in this series while my library tries to arrange an inter-library loan, so that didn't help, but I was disappointed in this one. It felt too long, and the way different agencies kept things from each other was frustrating. In some ways it fell between the two stools of police procedural and spy thriller.

SPOILERS

It also meant that at the end there was no living person who knew what had actually happened, which was unsatisfactory to me. The spy bits - the Paper Boy in Palestine and Efraim's involvement in the present day murders - felt a bit shoe-horned in: the narrator resorted to having Fred tell Eden all about the Palestine backstory and to simply telling the reader about it himself in the second case.

The Paper Boy story told on the kibbutz made no sense to me - how does a story about a boy who steals children while they sleep help to stop children going out and roaming dangerous streets at night? On the other hand, I thought the 'Fragments' did a good job of keeping the reader guessing about which woman carrying a violin was about to find her family massacred.

I read this more or less in one sitting, and it is my favourite of the series so far, although I'm not sure what the blue dress on the cover of my edition had to do with the story.

This concerns the discovery of the body of a student who went missing two years ago, and then widens out as more bodies are discovered. I liked the interview snippets from the subsequent review of 'the catastrophe', which increased the sense of suspense. I will be interested to see how many of the recurring characters make it into the next book.

Recommended.

I found this pretty implausible in many ways, but it was an engrossing read, and the Bangkok sections were especially effective. Well translated.
