Star-crossed, time travelling lovers who have to try and save the world and themselves. If you go into the past it's a one-way deal and you don't survive long. But two lovers are willing to try to make sure that the present they're in doesn't happen, because things are bad and maybe by saving themselves they can save the world, they can make a difference, no matter what the cost.
I'm not the biggest fan of Time Travel and while this was an interesting twist and really the way things go downhill were interesting, still I just felt like I wanted more out of the story and maybe a bit less trauma. Another reader would probably have enjoyed it more.… (mais)

Book source ~ Tour

Isabel Sanborn and Diego Nadales broke up over a decade ago, but neither has gotten over the other. A chance meeting in Denver right after Isabel signs her divorce papers puts them on a precarious path to love. And destruction. The only way to save the world is for Isabel to go back in time, but there’s no return ticket and no guarantee the plan will even work. Will she take that quantum leap?

I’ll admit to being a tad confused in the beginning, but things are soon sorted out. Then there’s a bombshell (almost literally) and then I’m back to being confused. But that’s probably just me. There’s a reason why I don’t read many time travel books anymore and it’s because I can’t figure them out. They make my head hurt. Lol However, there are things in this story that are never explained or fleshed out. Some are just dropped in like a bomb, others are mentioned and then never heard from again. Or maybe I missed them? Not sure. Anyway, it isn’t until about 20% that I really became invested in the story. After that it’s a race to the end, to see if our world is saved. Or not.

There are three POVs and the story switches between Isabel, Diego, and a physics professor named Matt Hudson. I’m not sure I totally understand what was going on in The Magic Kingdom (it’s a nickname for a place, not really Disney Land), but the sci-fi mumbo jumbo takes a back seat to the characters and the world they are living in. I couldn’t help but cheer them on because they really needed the cheering. What a mess. Yikes! Plus, I really wanted Isabel and Diego’s story to have a HEA because of everything they had been through. Do they? You’ll have to read to find out how it all ends.

My original Dead Time audiobook review and many others can be found at Audiobook Reviewer.

The third book in the "Between Two Evils" series starts off right where "Lost Time" ended and continues the story from the perspectives of Diego, Shannon, and Lani. Diego is still in an alternate universe 20 years in the future trying to get back to his own time and his Isabel (hopefully). Shannon is held at the biodome occupied by a herd of misogynistic zealots. In the meantime, Lani wants to go rescue her daughter, Shannon, but also has to find a way of saving the inhabitants of her biodome, which is failing. Summarizing the plot briefly is virtually impossible. There is seriously a lot going on and I don't want to put in spoilers. To say the storyline is complex would be an understatement, and to have any chance of following the plot and all the clever little nuances, these books should definitely be read in order starting with "Crossing Time". It's pretty impressive how D.L. Orton keeps things straight and manages to create such exciting, different worlds. I think the most amazing thing though is how real the characters feel and what they are going through. Yes, this is science fiction, time travel, apocalyptic worlds, adventure, but all the emotion involved and the way the relationships between various characters is depicted is incredible. I would highly recommend this if you enjoy stories with well-developed characters, like some romance and are not averse to exploring alternate realities.

In contrast to the second book, this one contains non-stop action. It is really fast paced and although it is twice as long as the previous book, the end came far too soon. I was enjoying it so much. Out of the three books, this one is definitely my favorite so far. The story arc regarding Shannon was absolutely terrifying and gripping. But then Ms. Orton inserts little breathers and some humor. I loved the scenes between Diego and Isabel and how the banter between them, reminiscent to book 1, came back to life here.

But I would also like to add a trigger warning: some scenes depict violence against women, which sensitive readers/listeners may find disturbing.

I was happy that this one didn't end in a mighty cliff-hanger. The ending was very satisfactory and left you with a promise of more excitement and adventure. I am very curious to find out what's next in store for Diego (and Isabel). I'm hoping the fourth book will be out soon!

Noah Michael Levine and Erin deWard continue to narrate the series. I have praised their teamwork, their timing, their accents, their consistently fantastic voices often enough, I don't know what else I could possibly add. Their narration makes this story come to life in a very special way. Full stars.

There were no problems with the production of the audio.

My original Lost Time audiobook review and many others can be found at Audiobook Reviewer.

This is the second book in the "Between Two Evils" series, which consists of three books so far. "Crossing In Time" should ideally be read prior to this one.

Having listened to the first book two years ago, I was a tad worried whether it would be difficult to get back into the story. The story line in book 1 was very complex with several perspectives and different time periods. Here, we have a linear story line and basically just Diego's story. It was no problem at all to get back into it. However, I was expecting to find out more about Isabel. The love story between Diego and Isabel was a major part of book 1. Instead, there are two other perspectives introduced: 17-year-old Shannon's and her mother's, Lani. Lani is the doctor treating Diego after he mistakenly arrives some 20 years in the future in an alternate reality.

The story line is easy to follow. Even though I am not a big fan of science fiction / dystopian / time travel stories, I really enjoy this series because D.L. Orton has a genuine talent for creating interesting, likeable, multi-layered characters and all the relationship aspects are so well done and believable. This installment is a lot less steamy than the first book was. There is also less action. Nevertheless, I truly enjoyed it. It is very well written and filled with some nice little bits of humor. While I'm still dying to find out about Diego and Isabel, I am now also fully invested in what happens to Shannon.

My main complaint would be that the end just came out of nowhere. The story moves along quite slowly initially and then becomes pretty intense and really emotional towards the end. I was actually really shocked when the audio stopped and had to check I wasn't missing anything. If I had checked that book 2 was only half the length of book 1 maybe I wouldn't have been so taken by surprise.

So, by the end of this book, there are still lots of questions unanswered, but I am looking forward to the next installment, which - fortunately - is already available on audio.

The narration is once again done by Noah Michael Levine and Erin deWard. They won an Audie Award in 2016 and are my favorite duo of narrators. Their performances are simply outstanding. They work together so well. Erin deWard's portrayal of young Shannon is brilliant. Noah Michael Levine's accents are excellent. This would be worth listening to just for the narration.

There were no issues with the quality of the production.

I would highly recommend this series to anybody who enjoys time travel adventures and/or dystopian stories and who is not put off by some romance / relationship issues and enjoys a bit of humor / banter.
