This is one of the essential works for the history of color photographer. Outerbridge was arguable the greatest master of color technique as it existed in his time (1930'3). He used tthe complex, time consuming (hours for one print) carbro process which is thoroughly explained here, along with all aspects of the color theory and technology behind it.
The 14 tipped in color plates represent his photography as its best.
Extremely slow (low sensitivity to light), and of limited tonal scale, essential to high quality studio based color was comprehensive high-wattage lighting. Mastering studio lighting for color was one of Outerbridge's key to his commercial and artistic success.
Outerbridge was competitive with Steichen. He did less work and was less famous, but more creative and more in control of his printing. He got more money for his commercial work. One source recounts an exhibition with photographs presented by them both - the visitors were reported as going right by the Steichens to look at Outerbridge's prints.
