TRUE ESOTERIC TRADITIONS :
A SERCH FOR THE SOURCE OF WESTERN CULTURAL VALUES

INTRODUCTION

After Dale Palmer had spent many years in research for this book, and was preparing
it for publication, he asked me to write the Introduction. He showed me, a long-time
friend of his, some of the pages when it was still in manuscript form. I am a Coptic
Christian medical doctor and psychiatrist, a native Egyptian now living in the United
States. This book traces many of the values of Western civilization back to my country
Egypt. 1 was impressed with the way in which he had correlated events in history and
chronology, how the thoughts and actions of strong leaders had forced those whom they
led to comply with the patterns they visualized, and how much humanity still needs to
learn.

When does history begin? Can the broad sweep of events and personalities through the
ages be outlined in one book? What concepts are most important from the past? What
can we learm from the decisions made by political, military, and religious leaders down
through the centuries? How can we profit from reviewing the history and results of
mass movements such as the Crusades and the Inquisition? Why is the true history of
our planet Earth and its people in different ages important? Has it been one of gradual
but increasing progress and improvement, one of decline, or a mixture of the two? Has
it manifested in cycles? What is its status today? What are the factors (observed from
experience and history) that have brought about what we see today.

In asking these questions, we come to realize that memory is the basis of al
development, all progress, of all achievement! The experience of every moment of our
lives, unremembered, would be useless. Indeed, our very lives would be useless without
memory. Memory functions to hold realizations in place so we can take advantage of
them toward a purposeful end.

This book, however you react to it, has given you a useful tool for endeavor
thought or action or both. Perhaps its greatest value is in that it will make you think
which I feel is the author's intent. It has made me think, and I recommend that you
read it for yourself, to that end.

Few of us, in our busy everyday lives, have the opportunity to travel through history in
research, to find answers to these questions. We must remember, always, that all aspects
of history are subjective. Historians in various countries and eras of time have tried to
record events for future generations, but events are only the objective manifestation of
the thoughts and emotions of individuals and groups of individuals -which are always
subjective. The historian perceives history subjectively, and the reader reads and reacts
to written history subjectively. He has been conditioned all his life by his studies
experiences, relationships, observations, prejudices, environment, and the scope of his
ability to understand. All these factors lead him to believe that he comprehends clearly
and rightly... but is he ready to consider a new idea, particularly if the new idea does not
fit in with his current understanding?

This book represents research by the author over the last 30 years or so. He outlines...
