2030 Brandeis, by Lewis J. Paper (read 15 Nov 1986) This is written by a lawyer who got his Master's degree from Georgetown. The book is not too well organized, and it is written for laymen, not lawyers. But it was engrossing reading, particularly the part after Brandeis was appointed to the Supreme Court in 1916. He was born in Louisville, KY, on Nov 13, 1856--the same day as my paternal grandmother. His father came to America in 1848 from Prague. He left his fiancee behind, but she came over and they were married Sept 5, 1849, in Madison, Ind. Brandeis went to Harvard Law, practiced in St. Louis a short time, and then in Boston till he was appointed to the Supreme Court, when he was 59 years old. He died Oct 5, 1941, after having retired from the Supreme Court on Mar 13, 1939. Bill Douglas was appointed his successor. This would have been a better book if it were more scholarly--its treatment of legal issues is awfully shallow.… (mais)
