I did enjoy the book, but was also glad it wasn't any longer.

The Governor of Massachusetts could have used a little help with his writing; His compelling personal story reads a little flat in parts. I particularly enjoyed his account of receiving a scholarship to attend ultra-posh Milton Academy which takes him from poverty in Chicago. My children attend an elite New England private school and it was a shock coming from an upper middle class household. Many of my children's friends, like Governor Patrick's friends, have several homes and servants. Their place of privilege is assured regardless of their effort. He approaches assimilation into the ranks of the elite with the studiousness of a National Geographic explorer.

Governor Patrick's account of his difficult relationship with his father was also fascinating. His father, a noted jazz musician, was dismissive of his son's achievements and condemned him as being co-opted by the white establishment. Not the typical response of a father to his son's success at Harvard!

There are many small touches that show the Governor as a caring father and husband. He devotes much time and sympathy to the plight of his wife who he meets while she is still married to an abusive husband. I also enjoyed his family's painful discussion following a concert by 50 Cent, who his daughters like, but the lyrics horrify, rightly, the Patrick family adults.

His is an interesting story which will likely need a sequel: this is his second term as Governor and he has been confronting political corruption and a difficult economy. There's another book right there!

Governor Deval Patrick's book, A Reason to Believe: Lessons from an Improbable Life, is an inspirational story of a young, African American man from the South Side of Chicago who graduated from Milton Academy, Harvard College, and Harvard Law and then went on to high profile jobs in government and corporate America capped off by his election to Massachusetts' highest office.

I really enjoyed this book. Governor Patrick's story is truly improbable and should serve as an inspiration to anyone who reads this book. He is obviously a very intelligent man who has made the most of his gifts and opportunities. I had the privilege of meeting Governor Patrick at a book signing and he was very gracious and demonstrated remarkable humility given his accomplishments.

I encourage anyone who is looking for an enjoyable, inspirational read to pick up a copy of this book. The odds of success were certainly not in Governor Patrick's favor, but through diligence and optimism he certainly has led an accomplished life and written a great book.
