Written by someone who's "been there", this is an excellent resource for youth workers, parents or anyone who cares about hurting teens. Drawing from his 30 years of experience as a youth worker and counselor, and using the latest research on self-injury, Penner paints a vivid picture of life for teens who cut. He outlines the social situations, personal trauma and crises, and distorted thinking that often lead and contribute to SI, and shares how to lovingly help these teens find hope and healing.

Thoroughly researched and presented. It is a heavy subject, but a short, consise book that is well-written and easy to understand. Well rounded view of science and faith. While geared primarily towards youth workers, parents and teens themselves may find this book useful. Penner places sidebars throughout the book to relate to and challenge teens who cut and their parents. Highly recommended as a starting resource for anyone working with teens who cut or interested in learning more about this misunderstood behavior.

Excellent, excellent book! Just about everything you need to know to function effecively in youth ministry. Addresses important topics such as boundaries, knowing your ministry style, and how to listen, validate and empower your students. Also discusses the top ten struggles teens face in todays culture. One of the best things about this books is that it gives you the knowledge and tools to make a difference, but also what to do when you're in over your head. I would say that this should be required reading for any youth worker!… (mais)
