The beginning of this was not much to my taste, hopping about and detailing battles and other space conflicts. However just after the 1/3rd mark (at the point where I was about to put it down) it picked up and got interesting. There is decent character development and conflict (internal and between characters) here and it was well drawn. I was eager to begin book 2 at the end .. yeah the cliffhanger caught me.

Basically once the author left off with the space maneuvers (which in my opinion could have been expressed without such detail (read pages and pages of it) the novel came together, got interesting, and much more importantly cohesive. A bit more of what was going on with the pylars/vedeks and B'hala would have been welcome. In short if your a fan try it out, just give the beginning some leeway.… (mais)

Note: I received access to read this book from the publisher for free. That doesn't influence my opinion on it, but it is worth disclosing.

Midnight Suns: Infernal Rising commits the largest sin that exists for a media tie-in: it made me less interested in playing the game it acts as a prequel to. I was extremely disappointed in the writing. I felt like I needed to know about every character beforehand, because they certainly aren't described well, or consistently throughout the book. The word "based" is used to describe someone without irony. Multiple things "exploded into a thousand pieces," over the course of the story.

I listened to the audiobook and didn't enjoy the narration. The narrator frequently mispronounces words, inserts strange pauses (like he is turning the page while reading the book) and, generally, doesn't have a great flow.

As dippy as a mid-level Xena episode, it's hard to hate this too much. Written for a younger audience than some media tie ins ... or maybe just a dumber one.
