Marvel's The Man in the Iron Mask is Alexandre Dumas' classic work turned into a graphic novel. The novel continues the story of the three musketeers. Aramis finds Phillippe, the unknown brother of Louis XIV, and plots to take him out of the Bastille and place him on the crown. His plan, although at first seems to be working, quickly crumbles beneath his feet. Louis XIV is enraged that he has been treated badly and thrown into jail by Aramis and Porthos. He sends D'Artagnan, their former musketeer comrade and companion, after them. The fates of Aramis, Porthos, D'Artagnan, and Athos are revealed in this graphic novel of the last part of Dumas' classic work.
This graphic novel could be useful in the classroom to help struggling or uninterested readers. If your class is reading the classic work, and someone is struggling to understand the plot, they could read this graphic work. This work would also be useful to give someone a small tidbit about French history or the Musketeers. However, I do not think that the graphic novel alone should be the basis of any study.
This was my first graphic novel, or comic, to read. It took me a bit to get a hang of the dialogue bubbles and point of view boxes, but I found it to be a quick read. I cannot say that this style of writing is right for me. The art was very well done and the story flowed well, but at times I just could not get passed the "booms" and "thuds" of the graphic novel. I missed the details and descriptions that come with the full text.

This one was kind of hard to follow without knowing the original story.

Half are great and half are weak with obvious plots, tissue thin characters, and passable artwork. It seemed like a lot of the writers thought it was noir just to write about crime and put in a twist, but noir is really a mood and an evocation, not just shadowy panels and dames with obscure motives. Many feel like snippets of a bigger whole but the few pieces that sing really go to town. Lime I said about six or so on here that really get what noir means.
