A bedridden girl convinces her sister to spy on their creepy neighbor, who keeps animals in cages in his backyard, and occasionally takes them inside, although they never come back out. This summary makes it sound like horror, and for most of the story, you’re sure it is, or at least might be horror, and maybe it is, or maybe it’s something more, but what it definitely is is haunting and sad and lovely. The pieces of the story, the sick sister and the animals and the creepy neighbor all come together perfectly at the end in that way where you feel both hollowed out and heavy at the same time.… (mais)
This was recommended to me a couple of years ago, and I can't help but wonder if Me From a Couple of Years Ago would have liked it more. There were some stories I liked a lot, and some that didn't hold my interest at all. All very well written, with beautiful language, but left me a little blah anyway.

I'm wavering on recommending this - on the one hand, the characters and world are compelling and unusual. On the other, there's just a bit too much that's not adequately explained. I'm usually fine with books that don't spell out all the details of their worlds' cultures and physics, but there do need to be enough crumbs for the reader to figure out the logic of the place. I felt like I had to work too hard to find those crumbs, let alone make full sense of them.
