Incredibly dry, and weirdly obsessed with trying to convince you that Puerto Rico wasn't that big a deal to the Spanish empire--which just stands in odd contrast to the sheer amount of investment that must have gone into building the two huge forts in San Juan.

In 19th-centry Puerto Rico, a wise old woman and her cunning young neighbor devise a plan to rescue a runaway slave, in a book at once quietly humorous and affecting.

This book its sort of a condense view on the history from Puerto Rico, from it ecological beginnings to more contemporary times. Really good reading. (My copy is in Spanish)

Set in Puerto Rico during the mid-19th century, Vitita and Rosa attempt to help a young runaway slave. Together, they feed the woman, keep her safe from slave-hunters, and keep her hidden. The book takes on a folk-tale quality as the two women protect the slave by playing tricks on the slave-hunters. Richly illustrated, the book tells a story of courage and determination.
