An excellent debut & an excellent audiobook! The story and characters are awash in all sorts of influences, but they come through in super subtle ways, like a good sauce. There are hints of Star Wars, X-Men, Greek & Egyptian culture, and even a splash of Dr. Strange. What might be most impressive is how well Pool manages such a large cast of characters. She makes all of their journeys meaningful and interesting. The only quibble I had was that the main bad guy was a little flat, but I can see where the seeds of growth are planted for the rest of the series. This is right up there with [a:Shusterman Richard|19374164|Shusterman Richard|]'s [b:Scythe|28954189|Scythe (Arc of a Scythe, #1)|Neal Shusterman||49179216] trilogy for me as a top YA entry in recent years. The audio performance was equally impressive and really falls into the realm of true voice acting, rather than just narration.… (mais)

Third in the series; I grew impatient with it but was determined to finish it to see how everything played out. The angst grew tiresome. I used to love falling into these long epic fantasies, but now I don't have as much tolerance for them. Your mileage may vary.

MASQUERADE OF THE HEART by Katy Rose Pool is a fantastic ending to a duology that melts your heart. Once you get past the self-sacrifice for your love trope, the rest of the story is exciting and full of surprises. Ms. Pool’s resolution to the many problems Marlow faces may be a little too clean, but it still satisfies as it also shows that you can’t win them all. I particularly love how Marlow truly acts her age. She is very much still a teenager making rash decisions and creating many avoidable mistakes. However, she shows her growing maturity in taking ownership of those mistakes and seeking to rectify them. At the end of the day, however, my heart belongs to Adrius, who once again is as golden, as melancholic, and as hopelessly in love as he was in the first book. MASQUERADE OF THE HEART ends Ms. Pool’s second series, and with it she becomes a must-read author for me. Her ability to create fantasy that is somehow realistic in feel despite any magic is excellent. I can’t wait to see what she has for us next!… (mais)

Maybe a little slow to get into, but I had along trip & this was the audiobook available. Once I met enough characters & their situation, however, I didn't want to stop listening.
Lots of action, choices to make me think, and an ending that was over the top in making it thru risks & hazards.
