Alexandra has a secret. Several, in fact. One, in particular, is a secret she must keep, no matter the cost. You see, she's not entirely human. Half human, half Fae, she's been tasked with keeping her family secrets hidden. Among other things, anyway.

For as long as she can remember, she's kept to herself in hopes of keeping people from discovering who, and what, she is. While her solitary existence hasn't exactly been a piece of cake, she's made do with all that she's been given. She's also taken the time to hone her abilities amidst the turmoil of recently losing her mother. Despite her recent heartache, she's determined to make her mother proud in every way possible.

When a night on the town goes awry, other supernatural beings become privy to her presence. Alexandra begin to wonder if she'll be able to remain once step ahead of those who seek to do her harm. The vampires are aware of her power as well as the secrets she's tried so very hard to protect - secrets that may prove be her complete undoing.

Her main goal is to protect herself in hopes of completing the mission set before her. Running from the enemy, she winds up in the arms of the one person she never expected to meet - a vampire named Krystoff. He's no ordinary vampire, though. He's an enforcer for his clan who must make sure that none of their laws are broken. Her chance meeting with him leaves her ruffled to the very core. Krystoff promises to protect her, no matter the cost, even if it means he must give up his life in order to do so.

Alexandra finds herself falling for Krystoff, something she knows should not be possible. He's a vampire and she's a Fae - a crossing of the species is technically taboo. Unable to refuse the stirrings of her heart, she gives in to what she feels and places her complete trust in Krystoff's hands. As opposing forces continue to circle in, it's up to them to thwart the enemies plans. Only then can they find happiness in the face of such adversity.

The premise of the book was a very unique one - one that can certainly be expanded upon much more in-depth. I liked the idea of a vampire and Fae being together very much. I do think the lore behind the vampires and it's council needed to be made a little clearer as well as that of of the Fae's true purpose.

The small insight in regards to the Exiled was also intriguing, but I confess since things weren't properly explained about who they were and how they actually got there, I kinda had 'Huh?' moment. The series has promise, though. Hopefully, the second book in the series will tie up those loose ends. All in all, I liked the book and will be reading the next book once it becomes available.

A Demon’s curse lifetimes ago causes Gabriel to agonizingly change into a huge, black, fire-breathing dragon with every sunrise and then painfully back to a man every sunset.

Alayia is powerless to save her beloved brother Robert from the black dragon that descended unexpectedly upon on them in the field. Forced to flee her home, she vows that Robert’s death will be avenged.

Coincidentally, Alayia and Gabriel meet late that evening at a tavern in a nearby town. Instantly attracted, the pair talk the night away. Near dawn, Gabriel leaves. Evil men attempt to capture Alayia but she is rescued by a stranger named Talon. Thus starts the adventure as Alayia begins a journey of discovery, mystery, and magic. Old prophecies align to shape future events and, with guidance from unexpected allies, Alayia strives to break the Curse of Innok.

I enjoyed this fantasy adventure novel. The major characters were unique and easily identifiable. I liked the verbal sparring and light teasing between Gabriel, Talon and Alayia. A few times I felt the transitions were rough or slightly out of kilter and occasionally, the motivations for certain actions or decisions seemed rather flimsy. Overall, I thought the pacing was about right and I found the conclusion particularly satisfying. I look forward to the next book in this series which I hope will focus primarily on Talon.
