About the Author

John Portmann is Associate Professor of Religious Studies at the University of Virginia. He studied philosophy at Yale and Cambridge Universities. He is the author of When Bad Things Happen to Other People (2000), Sex and Heaven (2003), and A History of Sin (2007).

Who would ever think a book about sin could be tedious? Especially when it compiles such brilliant minds as Oscar Wilde. Yes, in fact, the editor managed to find the most tedious thing he could of Oscar Wilde's, probably so he didn't spoil the whole tenor of the book. I plugged forward, thinking surely in a book of this nature, with the wonderful minds he had assembled, the tedium was only temporary; alas, I was mistaken, and wasted a few good hours of my life. I don't imagine too many people come through this book with any better philosophical concept of why sin might not be so terrible than when they started. Ho hum. Don't waste your time.… (mais)
