These double digests are quite large. This one has a novella, 4 novelettes and 12 short stories, as well as a couple poems, short & flash fiction, science fact and other articles, plus book reviews.

Slow start with the lead-off novella by Adam-Troy Castro. He is a prolific author who I have not read before and based only on this story, 'Burning the Ladder', I'm not eager for more. Later stories I found more interesting, such as 'Boy in the key of Forsaken' by Eric Del Carlo and the novelette 'Planetfall' by A. C. Koch. I wish Planetfall was fleshed out more as there are missing pieces of this story and an unknown end. A note after the story says "Planetfall" is adapted from a collection of linked stories, Spaceship Days, about a multi-generational mission to settle humanity on a new world. A little internet browsing reveals that this story is one chapter of many. Well, this happens but I felt a little cheated. There is an interview with the author about this interesting story which I also browsed at https://theastoundinganalogcompanion.com/2022/05/25/qa-with-a-c-koch/. As this stands alone I saw potential but the result disappointed.

Other stories I thought noteworthy were 'Bounty 1486', a rather exciting space rescue mission by Wendy Nikel, 'Firebreak' by Alice Towey, and 'Now We're Talking' by Jerry Oltion. The novella 'Beacon' by Sean McMullen was about a starship mission to respond to a Seti beacon. Pretty good but the ending was confusing to me. I know what the words said but the idea they were trying to convey wasn't clear in my mind. I did give up on some stories here, but most were interesting in one way or another.

Only read the Torgerson novella that was nominated for the Hugo, so I am not giving a star rating to the entire issue.

I couldn't make it through this one. It has a couple of interesting premises, which it mostly hadn't done much with by the point where I stopped reading (about half-way through). I don't care for the writing style, and couldn't get invested in the characters or the story.

My thoughts at greater length (including spoilers) here:

I have not read many recent issues of Analog Magazine and this is perhaps only the 2nd or 3rd one I have read by newish editor Trevor Quachri who has helmed the magazine for about 5 1/2 years now. I picked this one out of a friend's collection because it had a science fact article on a recent novel I read, Lockstep, by Karl Schroeder. I'm afraid I was a little disappointed by it since the author does a good explanation within the novel (although very slowly revealed) and there wasn't much added here to explain it - more really of why he had the idea in the first place.

In addition to a variety of editorials and columns there were 7 fiction stories included. They were varied and each of these stories was at least "OK". A few of the stories were a little weak in the telling. There were some interesting discussions on a variety of topics in the letters column as well as other pieces. Overall I'll give this an OK to good rating.

2015 Hugo Novelette Nominee: The Triple Sun by Rajnar Vajna. 3 stars for this novelette. A first-contact type of story.
