Seeks to explore the growth and efficiency of informal firms in the manufacturing sector in comparison with the larger, more formal firms. The study depends solely on a massive statistical analysis of the data available in the intermittent National Sample Survey and the Survey of Industries, giving the study a certain disembodied, impersonal character. It also just misses the game-changing transformations of the demonetisation episode and the induction of the GST regime, so its relevance is to that extent muted. To understand how all these policy and supporting developments have affected the informal ector, and through it the livelihoods of the greater majority of the population, such statistical works need to be supplemented by on-the-ground case studies of real people and actual enterprises.… (mais)
