Here was I thinking Elspeth Morrison's "Dorothy Dunnett Companion" was exhaustive. This copiously illustrated book really is the ultimate guide to everything you didn't know you didn't know about the first book in the Lymond series. And much as I am impressed by the author's research, I am in even greater awe than previously of Dorothy Dunnett's scholarship. She did not have a team of research assistants, she did it all herself, for all of her extraordinary books.

Excellent reference for Dunnett's wonderful and erudite tale spinning. I have read the Game of Kings several times, and read the collection "Lymond's poetry" which gives text to key poems in the Lymond series. But this reference work provides context to many of the subtler allusions, less well known sources and provides pictures of many of the key settings and historical characters. Also transliterations of some of the more obscure Scottish colloquialisms. Recommended for Dunnett fans!
