best remembered for his illustrations of works by L. Frank Baum. Richardson provided pictures for a series of schoolbooks called the Winston Readers. Richardson followed that initial work with many other book-illustration projects, including editions of the works of Hans Christian Andersen, Aesop's Fables, Mother Goose, Pinocchio, and East of the Sun and West of the Moon, plus two volumes in the series of Andrew Lang's Fairy Books. For John Heming Fry's "diatribe against modernism," The Revolt Against Beauty (1934), Richardson supplied pictures that parodied the work of Paul Gauguin and Vincent Van Gogh and characters from newspaper comic strips.

Many favorite (that is, well-known) nursery rhymes, there were only two I was not familiar with. Simple illustrations in a quasi-antique style.
Fine for the target audience.

This book is very interesting because it incorporates a lot of the traditional children stories but, it does it in a very unique way. The book is very short and small in size but, it does have a hard cover which makes it very easy for young children to manipulate. I really liked how the illustrations in the stories looked very classic and a bit old fashioned, I feel like they really added to the classic aspect of the book. I did not like that the book did not include a table of contents or a list of all the stories or characters included in the short read. The title only says "Jack and Jill" which was the focus of the first page but, not the rest of the book. I also did not like that the story did not flow very well, the transition between pages and the different characters and stories did not transition well in the way it was intended to. I liked each page individually and each little passage individually but, I did not like it as a whole. I enjoyed the rhyme and rhythm in each one of the pages it made the stories sound a bit musical. I also liked that the pages were all formatted the same and the text was all in the same color and font. I feel like that did tie the pieces together a bit more. I also liked that the book was an easy read, it was a very fun book to read. Overall the book was interesting, appealing, and really highlighted the classics!… (mais)

Old Old Tales Retold: The Best-Beloved Folk Stories for Children features traditional literature stories. It has a table of contents and page numbers. It includes The Little Red Hen, The House on the Hill, The Three Little Pigs, Chicken Licken, The Old Woman and Her Pig, The Three Bears, and Little Tuppens. There is also a dedication page that explains that no one knows where these stories came from. I really liked how it provided a background idea of how stories only used to be told orally. I especially liked how it connected how both children then and now have grown to cherish these stories. I really liked the illustrations for each story, specifically on the title page of each story. This presented that each of these stories is separate, even though they are a part of the same book. There was also a relevant illustration tied into the beginning letter. The big idea of this story is that stories need to be shared any way possible, orally or written. It is a tradition that needs to be continued. Each story presents a different moral that all people need to learn.… (mais)
