Julia Ellen Rogers was born in Minburn, Iowa, a daughter of Ruth Dodd Llewellyn and Daniel Farrand Rogers. Her paternal grandfather Nathaniel Peabody Rogers was a famous abolitionist and women's right activist. Her younger sister Mary Farrand Rogers Miller also become a writer and educator, Julia attended Iowa State University and earned a master's degree in botany at Cornell University in New York. After graduation, she moved to Long Beach, California, where she lived for the rest of her life. She was a member of the Long Beach Board of Education for 10 years and a member and national secretary of the Long Beach Park Commission. She worked as a lecturer and wrote popular books for the general reader and children on natural history. Some of her books were reissued several times and some are still available online. These include Trees Worth Knowing (1917) and The Shell Book (1910).
