The book is thin and the story is, as well. Nettie Homes husband Derrick left abruptly to fight in World War I, not even telling her he'd been drafted. The story is of both of them, him at the front and her pregnant at home, providing some oversight at the family mill.

The story was sweet but just not very coherent. The characters were promising and could have been wonderful but their portraits were shallow.

Not a bad read, but not an author I would reach for again, either.
