Brian M. Ronaghan recently retired from his position as director of the Archaeological Survey of Alberta, the government regulatory agency responsible for the study and conservation of archaeological resources in the province. He holds a BA in history and a BA and MA in archaeology, all from the University of Calgary. In addition to his more than twenty years as a regulatory compliance officer, he led archaeological research and compliance studies as a professional consultant in western Canada and the northwestern United States, undertaking field surveys, analysis, excavations, and traditional use studies, authoring numerous reports and publications, and taking part in several public hearings. During his tenure in government, he was responsible for the conduct of all archaeological studies, initially in one region and later for all of Alberta, and for the issuance of all archaeological permits and the management of archaeological sites and reports pertaining to them. He also participated in regulatory approval processes for major developments, undertook consultation with Indigenous groups and industry organizations, and developed management policy. His interests principally reside in archaeological field and analytical methods and in conservation management policy for heritage resources.
