A sweet story about love and healing

This story is full of wonderful moments. Diane is a fantastic character. Her struggles early on to figure out how to open herself up to her daughter and prevent her from growing up without a loving home were heartbreaking. The way the love developed between Diane and Michelle, with Anna frequently as the catalyst and unintentional wing girl with her innocent comments about her mother's growing affection for her new favorite playmate, was precious and fresh. I'm not sure that I have read a story like that before.

Only a couple of things detract from the story for me. Michelle's character is a bit undeveloped. We don't really get any clues into her past and why she seems inconsistent about various things. (Like wanting to take things slowly then... not.) The other is a bit too much of an emphasis on older, very aggressive, and ... non commitment seeking women. Perhaps it is to show the difference between younger lesbians who grew up in a more accepting environment and the older, don't ask, don't tell generation. But it seemed like too many of them.

All in all, an excellent book.

Wonderful story!

Some of the prose is awkward early in the book, but it gets better as it goes. The story progression is excellent! One of the sweetest courtship stories I have ever read, made all the sweeter by their mutual ignorance of the other's growing affection.

The added feature of being set in the nineties and the twist that takes the story on an advocacy path is a large part of the story's charm.

A sweet reminder of how much progress we've made

Lesbian romance set in a time when gay lifestyles were tolerated by most, but not really recognized as acceptable are quite bittersweet. This one deals with the inability to live openly throughout the story but, thankfully, that isn't an impediment to the two main characters getting or staying together. Rather, it is a fact that they deal with as a given.

Dana in particular is a fantastic character.

Cute story, but...

I enjoyed the story, but found the characters a bit shallower than in Ms Rose's other books that I have read. It probably has to do with the shorter length.
