This couldn't be more clichéed, stereotypical, and shallow if it tried.
But I think it accomplished exactly what it set out to do.

I expect there is a certain audience that isn't yet surfeited with those clichées and doesn't have the same expectation of originality I do and can therefore get much more enjoyment out of this.

It was a fun read if you can look past those flaws.

My Thoughts:
In this book we acquired a Gandalf! (Not literally, but metaphorically speaking.) It remains to be seen if this Gandalf character is going to be a positive addition to the series or not...

The plot has kind of slide down a little bit. It seems to me that Simon and Tristan are just running around chasing their tail in the story... What is that all about?! At least Peaches got his priorities straight!

This is the first Montague & Strong Case Files book without an audiobook version at the time I read this book. I was annoyed about that... Even though... with all that moaning, I still enjoyed this book. Very much! So this book gets a four with me.

Empirical Evaluation:
Story telling quality = 4.5
Character development = 5
Story itself = 4
Writing Style = 4
Ending = 4
World building = 4.5
Cover art = 4
Pace = 3.5
Plot = 3

Overall Rating: 4 out of 5 cherries

My Thoughts:
It is becoming a trademark of this series that every subsequent book starts right where the previous book left off. And that is kind of growing on me.

And then, we get to see a Peaches arguing philosophy with Simon! Woohh!! This is Simon we are talking about... Simon who gets a headache every time Tristan tries to explain anything to him that is more complicated than eating! Good thing that Peaches' "philosophic phase" didn't last very long...or our protagonist might just develop a permanent migraine! And that wouldn't do, now would it?! He gotta fight the baddies and get beat up... again... I think this is my favouritest book yet in the series.

This is the book that introduced me to the Ian Dex series. And the urban fantasy geek in me cheered to have stumbled into another promising series! We seem to be getting a lot of "Dexes" here. Uncle Dex. Ian Dex. Mmm...

Honestly, I am torn about this book. I wavered between three and four stars, but it ultimately came down closer to a three. It feels like an intriguing basis for an urban fantasy series, but at the same time, the world is not fleshed out. It's action-packed, but light on details and some of the known details don't make much sense. More time on the backstory and less on the action would have made all the difference to me.
