Marley Cicero has come home to move in with her parents because she is broke, with no job, and a recently ended relationship. With an infamous homecoming incident still haunting her past and her high school nemesis living in a mansion next door, Marley doesn't know what she is going to do with her life. When she is forced to take a job as PE teacher and girls' soccer coach in the same miserable high school with her nemesis and her former crush, Marley believes she has hit rock bottom.

Rock Bottom Girl is a fun story about a woman who doesn't believe that her life has mattered. While there are many hilarious situations and lots of witty, sarcastic dialogue, there are also some heavy, emotional moments. The story tackles some obstacles that make high school tough for adolescents and teachers alike and offers advice on how to overcome them. Marley's character is well developed, but she spends too much time with negative internal monologues and a lack of belief in herself. Jake's character is also well developed and his cockiness somehow makes him more loveable. The supporting characters are quirky and entertaining. Overall, Rock Bottom Girl is an enjoyable story that addresses some serious topics.… (mais)

The Corpse in the Closet is the second book in the Riley Thorn cozy mystery series by Lucy Score and it is just as entertaining as the first. The quirky and mostly loveable characters are back as well as several not quite as loveable characters including Nick’s parents and Riley’s ex-husband. The romance has heated up between Riley and Nick who are now living together and she works in his detective agency. This is a fast, fun, and often laugh-out-loud funny cozy with an interesting mystery which ends satisfactorily with hints of what to expect in the next instalment and I am so looking forward to it. A perfect read for a lazy afternoon.

Thanks to Netgalley and Sourcebooks Bloom Books for the opportunity to read this book in exchange for an honest review

Riley Thorn is living as normal a life as anyone can with an assortment of quirky elderly people living in her building and a desire to ignore her abilities as a psychic. Divorce has left her broke and her job is the definition of boring until private investigator Nick Santiago comes to her apartment looking for her across-the-hall neighbor who turns out to have been murdered. Because Riley had a vision that her neighbor would be killed and tried to tell the police, she becomes the only suspect. However, Nick believes she's innocent and decides to help her with hilarious results.

Riley Thorn and the Dead Guy Next Door is a rollicking good time novel filled with quirky characters, action, adventure, and romance. Even though Nick is a die hard womanizer, he still comes off as sympathetic and Riley is just a bundle of fun. The book introduces many characters and lots of events that have nothing to do with the main mystery, but they are still humorous, each in their own way. The mystery is completely implausible, but still manages to include twists and turns that ramp up the entertainment factor of the plot. Overall, Riley Thorn and the Dead Guy Next Door is just about as much enjoyment as can be packed into one novel. I'm looking forward to reading more in the series.

At the same time Ashley finds out that her fiance, Steven has been cheating on her, she is asked to help Jason Baine and his grandfather discover what illegal deal Steven has with Jason's stepsister, Victoria. Not only is Ashley trying to come to terms with the end of her engagement, but she also finds herself interested in Jason and his affectionate overtures.

In the acknowledgements, Lucy Score indicates that this is her first book, and it shows. Even though the dialogue is interesting, it doesn't do much to explain why Victoria's personality is so over the top and one dimensional. Also, Jason's actions in this book do not make him heroic even though he is the love interest. None of the characters are well developed, and the last chapter before the epilogue tells half of plot, making the pacing seem very random. In the end, I wish Lucy Score had gone back to this book and added some much needed changes before this rerelease.… (mais)
