After the Nazi annexation of Austria (Anschluss) in 1938, she went into exile. In 1946, she arrived in England, then lived in Sweden, where she married, and eventually she settled in France. She published three novels in English before her untimely death of cancer at the age of 36. She had a close friendship (possibly romantic) with Elias Canetti, to whom she dedicated her books.
