A mixed collection - I really enjoyed Gogol's "The Cloak", Saltykov's "How a Muzhik Fed Two Officials", and Korolenko's "The Shades, a Phantasy" but disliked Andreyev's "Lazarus" and Artzybashev's "The Revolutionist". The others fell in between. This collection did give me a good sampling of classic Russian authors, including several I had never heard of before.

Given that I'm a Russian literature newbie, this collection was helpful in exploring the Russian authors from the golden age through short stories. I particularly liked the introduction which talked about the authors and their style of writing. It helped gauge what to expect from the stories and also appreciate them better.

I am not a fan of most short stories, as they are not well enough developed to be enjoyable to me and Russian short stories are no different. Most of the stories dealt with class differences.
