A walk through a 1999 experience of Mardi Gras - from the perspective of a young brother and sister duo. Gorgeous, intricate illustrations capture the traditions of Mardi Gras Indians from the break of dawn on the morning of Zulu through the end of the parade. History of Black Mardi Gras Indians and Chitimacha peoples engagement in Mardi Gras are included.

Throughout this book, I was so happy to see the illustrations of my family members. The illustrator did a great job at making them look very realistic. I was able to connect with this book in many ways. Often, the band would "strike up" to honor the dead or celebrate just about anything. The jazz of our street makes us move our feet. So evert time you hear the band, you cant do anything but join them and dance.

This story is about the traditions we have in New Orleans and the parades that we have as a tradition. We have parades to celebrate the good times and even the bad times we dance around the city to the sounds of the band. Since I live in New Orleans the illustration felt like I was dancing with them in the City
