Excellent so far. I heard Barbara Sicherman give a talk about this book at the Radcliffe Institute for Advanced Study. My reading is going slowly now because I have so much to read for classes!

This book focuses on Alice Hamilton (b.1869), but we are also introduced to the others in this remarkable family--mothers, sisters, cousins--an amazing family community of hyperliterate women. Alice was the first female professor in the Harvard Medical School. Her sister was Edith Hamilton, who wrote her famous books about the Greeks, Romans, and mythology after she "retired" and when she was between the ages of 60 and 90. Edith's biography isn't worthy of her, simple hagiography written by the quite a bit younger woman who lived with her the last 30 or so years of her life. I wish someone would write a really good group biography of these women. Their papers are at Radcliffe.… (mais)
