This is a cute cozy mystery, with some neat personal undertones. It starts with a missing person but ends with the solving of ... will I won't say because I don't want to spoil it. Along the way a friendship is strengthened and relationship with family bolstered. The story takes place at a swanky retirement village near the Southern California coast where the aforementioned missing person is missing from and far more sinister events are uncovered. It is mainly character and action driven with the setting only described to enhance the story, although you do get a good sense of the place. Some tense action at the end before resolving into a satisfactory ending. Recommended for those who enjoy cozy mysteries.… (mais)

Although Gambling with Murder is the 5th installment in the Southern California mystery series by Lida Sideris, it works as a standalone. Corrie Locke, a rookie entertainment lawyer, and her friend and assistant Veera, a former security guard, aspire to be private investigators like Corrie’s late father. This time, they take a case involving a missing man at a posh retirement community called Villa Sunset.
Like many cozy mysteries, there are some aspects to the story that for me are a bit of a stretch while others are reasonably plausible. I appreciated that the Villa’s residents are portrayed as lively, both mentally and physically, and a bit rebellious, and that this portrayal does not cross the fine line between feisty and foolish. On the other hand, I often found myself annoyed at Corrie. She is a lawyer, yet she seems to operate on impulse with little regard for safety or legal consequences. Using her mother “undercover” in order to gain access to Villa Sunset and its residents is a reasonable plan but doing it with so little planning and preparation is not. All the loose ends are tied up in the end, but I would have enjoyed it more if there had not been so many of them slowing things down.
I think this is one of those “beach read” sorts of books that some will really enjoy while others find easy to put down.

I'm at chapter 17 and I am struggling to read this. Booooooorrrring! Sloooooooooooow!

I pride myself in finishing a book I start because at times it does get better but this is torture. If the story doesn't pick up soon, I'm going to have to do a DNF. I'm not finding any of the characters all that interesting or endearing but worst of all this is such a sloooooooooooow moving story. Slow as molasses.

Update: I finished it! Finally. It only took me over two months. And no, the story didn't move any faster or improve. I still don't like a single character in this book. And the ending was... meh.… (mais)

I think I would like to live in Villa Sunset. There are some crazy senior citizens living there. It turns out that some of the seniors are bored with their lives and want some excitement before they pass on. Corrie and Veera are going under cover to a senior center to find a missing resident. Since they are not seniors, they take Corrie's mom with them. She isn't quite a senior yet, but she knows how to fake it. As the gang investigates, they find there is so much more going on than they thought. Will they live to bring everyone to justice?… (mais)
