In 1881, she married Daniel Lothrop, publisher and founder of the Boston firm D. Lothrop Publishing, and he published her now-classic series of Five Little Peppers books. After Lothrop's death, she ran the company for a while. Besides writing, Harriett had a great interest in history and historical homes and buildings, several of which she helped to preserve.

his is the story of the Pepper family from the 19th century. A story of family love and overcoming poverty. I really enjoyed this as a child but it is so sugary now I could barely tolerate it! 284 pages
