A nice book-length treatment of a subject which seems to have been confined to more specialized journals until now, at least judging from the literature this book cites. The author focuses on the political side of rating decisions. He explains that rating agencies exercise so much power not because they purvey objective information but because their opinion is held in such high esteem by the majority of actors in the finance market.

I enjoyed the book and I think it should serve general readers very well. No special expertise in finance is required. I did find the author's theoretical framework ("constructivism" and the counterfactual method) to be a source of nuisance rather than one of value, since it really didn't add any leverage to his analysis. But even so I still recommend this book. Credit ratings are an interesting example of overvalued, tremendously influential, quasi-objective information in the modern world. I doubt any other books on this subject would be equally informative.… (mais)
