Patricia Skalka returns to Centuries & Sleuths with her second Dave Cubiak Door County Mystery, Death at Gills Rock.
Dave Cubiak is back, and this time he’s the new sheriff in town After tracking a clever killer in Death Stalks Door County, park ranger and former Chicago homicide detective Dave Cubiak is elected Door County sheriff. His newest challenge arrives as spring brings not new life but tragic death to the isolated fishing village of Gills Rock. Three prominent World War II veterans who are about to be honored for their military heroics die from carbon monoxide poisoning during a weekly card game. Blame falls to a faulty heater but Cubiak puzzles over details. When one of the widows receives a message claiming the men “got what they deserved,” he realizes that there may be more to the deaths than a simple accident.
Investigating, Cubiak discovers that the men’s veneer of success and respectability hides a trail of lies and betrayal that stems from a single, desperate act of treachery and eventually spreads a web of deceit across the peninsula. In a dark, moody tale that spans more than half a century, Cubiak encounters a host of suspects with motives for murder. Amid broken dreams, corruption, and loss, he sorts out the truth. Death at Gills Rock is the second book in Patricia Skalka’s Dave Cubiak Door County Mystery series.

EVENT HAS BEEN MOVED TO THE OCONOMOWOC PUBLIC LIBRARY
Six deaths mar the holiday mood as summer vacationers enjoy Wisconsin’s beautiful Door County peninsula. Murders, or bizarre accidents? Newly hired park ranger Dave Cubiak, a former Chicago homicide detective, assumes the worst but refuses to get involved. Grief-stricken and guilt-ridden over the loss of his wife and daughter, he’s had enough of death.
Forced to confront the past, the morose Cubiak moves beyond his own heartache and starts investigating, even as a popular festival draws more people into possible danger. In a desperate search for clues, Cubiak uncovers a tangled web of greed, betrayal, bitter rivalries, and lost love beneath the peninsula’s travel-brochure veneer. Befriended by several locals but unsure whom to trust or to suspect of murder, the one-time cop tracks a clever killer.
In a setting of stunning natural beauty and picturesque waterfront villages, Death Stalks Door County introduces a new detective series, “The Dave Cubiak Door County Mysteries.”

Patricia Skalka: Death Stalks Door County--Free mini writing workshop: Plotting the Novel
Every novelist faces the same challenge: How to move from concept to completed manuscript. The basic story line provides the seed. The protagonist, obstacle and goal form the overall framework. But whether you're writing a mystery, a romance or a work of literary fiction, it's still a giant leap to the finished book. One way to make the leap less intimidating and to eliminate time-consuming detours is to plot the novel using the beatline approach. A good beatline creates a detailed road map that carries the writer smoothly from start to finish, eliminating the "what now?" question that often slows the writing process. Following a beatline, the writer always knows what comes next. Mystery writer and former writing instructor Patricia Skalka will explain how this plotting strategy works and will guide participants in developing a strong, effective beatline for their work.
About Death Stalks Door County By day, the Door County Peninsula in northern Wisconsin is stunningly beautiful. But on a dark, cloudy night, this land of thick forests and deep water is a frightening place filled with shadows and whispers. Intrigued by the contrast between the two realities, Chicago writer Patricia Skalka imagines a sinister force lying beneath the serene veneer. A career freelance writer specializing in human interest stories, she has listened to many real-life sagas of ordinary people overcoming great pain and trauma.
A former staff writer for the Reader's Digest, Patricia Skalka has also worked as a magazine editor and a writer instructor at Columbia College Chicago. On the heels of a successful nonfiction career, she made the leap into fiction with her debut mystery Death Stalks Door County, published by Terrace Books/University of Wisconsin Press. A "tight, lyrical first novel," writes Publishers Weekly. For more information, see www.patriciaskalka.com
