J. Slauerhoff (1898–1936)

Het potlood (in de hand). Vijf gedichten uit de scheepskist van J. Slauerhoff is een bundel van vijf tot dan toe ongepubliceerde gedichten van J. Slauerhoff, die verscheen in 2010. Kees Lekkerkerker (1910-2006) was de bezorger van de Verzamelde werken van J. Slauerhoff (1898-1936) die tussen 1941 en 1958 verschenen. De nalatenschap van Slauerhoff bestond behalve uit een som geld, uit een zeemanskist vol met manuscripten en de bibliotheek van de dichter. Lekkerkerker ontving, een half jaar na de dood van Slauerhoff als beoogd bezorger van de Verzamelde werken deze zeemanskist, met daarin dus dit omvangrijke 'Slauerhoff-archief' met nog ongepubliceerd en onvoltooid werk dat voor een wetenschappelijke editie van de VW moest dienen; die edtie kwam er niet. In dat archief bevinden zich nog steeds verschillende ongepubliceerde werken van Slauerhoff, meestal nog onvoltooid. Ook deze vijf gedichten bevinden zich in dat archief. De bezorger, Menno Voskuil, meent, getuige zijn verantwoording bij de uitgave, dat deze vijf gedichten "publicatie meer dan waardig zijn". Er zijn 120 genummerde exemplaren gedrukt, dit is nummer 43. A very intriguing novel - one that makes you feel you should read it again to really get what was happening.

Slauerhoff mixes the historical story of the portuguese traveller and poet Camoës with a modern story of a ship's radiographer with psychological problems. As the novel progresses the stories becomes so intermingled that it begins to seem like the men are really one person, living in different times simultaneously. They travel through the same areas, encountering the same sites.

I really enjoyed the way Slauerhoff describes the areas and the hardships the men go through. He combines a harsh realism with a poetic style which makes for a great read.
His intertwining of the two stories is very well done - though it does get confusing at times. However, I feel like this confusion is in fact something Slauerhoff was intending - it matches the state of mind of the characters and gives the reader a sense of being inside their stories, rather than being a simple spectator.
The novel also gives an interesting view of historical China, the explorers who came there, and the life of Camoës. Simultaneously we get a view of the drab life on the ships of Slauerhoff's own time.… (mais)
