4803. Sioux City A Pictorial History, by Scott Sorensen and B. Paul Chicoine (read 1 Mar 2011) This is a magnificent picture-filled history of Sioux City, centered around pictures illustrative of the city through the years since its founding in the 1850's. It has certainly had its share of troubles, including the Panic of 1893, the Pelletier fire on Dec 23, 1904, the Ruff disaster of June 29, 1918, the Swift Explosion of Dec 14, 1949, the closing of Cudahy's in 1954--still being talked about when I came to Sioux City on Feb 28, 1955--and the closing of Armour's in 1963, the polio epidemic in 1952 and other years, and so much more, and of course there have been good things--the great things accomplished by the New Deal in Sioux City for example. I was glad to see a picture of the house where Harry Hopkins was born on Aug 17, 1890--sad the house no longer exists. A most poignant book.… (mais)
